Cambodia’s defence ministry said an interim observer team left Phnom Penh on August 26 to inspect a reported border incident.

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Television reported that Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said on August 26 the ministry had arranged a visit by the Interim Observer Team (IOT) from Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines and Vietnam. Colonel Nazlee bin Abdul Rahim, Malaysia’s defence attaché in Cambodia, led the team from Phnom Penh to Banteay Meanchey.
Cambodian officials said the visit followed an attempt by Thai troops to install barbed wire in a Banteay Meanchey border area at 2:20 p.m. the previous day. They said Thai troops withdrew after residents and Cambodian personnel stopped the attempt.
The spokesperson also said Cambodian and Thai secretariats of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) held working talks at a border crossing at 3:47 p.m. the previous day. The Cambodian Fourth Military Region’s secretariat head led the Cambodian side, and the Thai Second Army Region’s deputy chief of staff led the Thai side.
The sides discussed exchanging records and inspecting the site for the upcoming meetings. The secretariat meeting between Cambodia’s Fourth Military Region and Thailand’s Second Army Region was scheduled for August 26, 2025, and the full RBC meeting for August 27.
