Cambodia has agreed to start preliminary planning for a proposed Ratanakiri airport, with about 1,900 hectares earmarked for siting and a public-private partnership proposed.

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Television, September 5 — Cambodia’s government has agreed to start preliminary work on a proposed airport in northeastern Ratanakiri province. About 1,900 hectares have been provisionally earmarked for siting and planning.
The report said instructions went to the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation on September 2, calling for a public-private partnership. The proposed site is around Thmei village, Chey Otdom commune, Lumphat district.
That day the provincial government, civil aviation authorities and other organisations held a video conference to discuss how to implement and develop the project. A secretary of state at the aviation secretariat chaired the meeting, with representatives from several provincial departments.
Provincial representatives said an airport could boost the local economy and tourism and create jobs for residents and transport workers.
Civil aviation officials said setting aside land was the first step. A decision on whether the project would go ahead would require a wider assessment of the local economy’s potential.
The national infrastructure master plan released by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in 2024 calls for a better domestic airport network. It treats a Mondulkiri airport as a priority for the northeast.
Cambodia currently has three international airports and a domestic airport in Koh Kong province. According to official figures, it recorded 4.08 million air passenger journeys in the first seven months of 2025, up 16 percent year on year.
