China’s ambassador to Cambodia described the reappearance of a dugong near the Kep islands as an encouraging sign for Cambodia’s conservation efforts.

A dugong, a rare and vulnerable marine animal, has been spotted again near Cambodia’s Kep islands. Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin wrote on his official Facebook page that the sighting was a positive result of Cambodia’s conservation efforts.
Conservationists previously spotted a dugong in Cambodian waters in August 2024. The species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and is included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
