The Cambodian Human Rights Committee asked the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to urgently review the case and call for the soldiers’ release and repatriation.

The Cambodian Human Rights Committee submitted another urgent appeal to the United Nations over the capture and detention of 18 Cambodian soldiers. The committee’s appeal says Thai forces detained them on July 29, 2025, after the ceasefire took effect.
In a notice issued on September 6, the committee, the Cambodian government’s body for human rights affairs, said it had sent the appeal to Dr Ganna Yudkivska, chair-rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. It asked the UN to urgently examine the case, declare the detention unlawful and call for immediate release and repatriation.
The committee also asked the UN to monitor Thai authorities’ compliance with international human rights obligations, remind Thailand of its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the 1949 Geneva Conventions, and include the case in the UN Human Rights Council’s annual report.
