Lieutenant General Chuon Narin, Phnom Penh Police Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner-General of the National Police, recently ordered police in all 14 districts to step up operations against online fraud. He warned that some foreign suspects were using Cambodia as a “safe haven” for technology-related crime and required districts to inspect suspicious premises to prevent closed fraud or gambling operations from reopening.
At Phnom Penh’s October public security meeting, Chuon Narin said all police personnel must maintain “100 percent readiness” and remain on standby 24 hours a day to respond to orders from superiors and emergencies. He also called for stronger protection of leaders, the maintenance of public order and faster implementation of the “Safe Communes and Sangkats” programme.
He stressed that combating online fraud and illegal gambling was a current priority, requiring district police to continue thorough inspections and strengthen joint law enforcement to firmly curb criminals’ use of Cambodia for cross-border cybercrime.
