On October 24, the border command centre in Thailand’s Tak province said in a notice that large numbers of foreign nationals had continued to enter Thailand from Myanmar through natural border crossings since October 22, mainly around Villages 1 and 9 in Mae Ku subdistrict, Mae Sot district, Tak province.
As of 7 a.m. on October 24, the relevant Mae Sot authorities had assisted in detaining and accommodating 1,049 people who had entered illegally. Local officials said preliminary figures showed that they came from several countries. The larger nationality groups included 399 Indians, 147 Chinese, 138 Vietnamese, 94 Ethiopians, 43 Pakistanis, 66 Filipinos and 27 Indonesians, alongside other people from Africa, Nepal, Laos and Myanmar.
Thailand’s military, immigration police and local police are jointly verifying identities and conducting background checks to establish these foreign nationals’ true identities and reasons for entering the country. Officials stressed that the illegal-entry cases would be handled in accordance with legal procedures and that border controls would be strengthened to prevent similar incidents.
