Thai media report that nine Cambodian workers died when a Toyota Fortuner plunged into an irrigation canal in Ratchaburi on December 3. Police are investigating the cause and pursuing the driver who fled.

Thai media report that a car plunged into a canal in Ratchaburi province, killing nine Cambodians.

Thai outlet Khaosod reported that, two days ago, nine people were found dead inside a Toyota Fortuner that had plunged into an irrigation canal behind Ratsamanchan temple in Ratchaburi province.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of December 3. After receiving a report, officers from the police station identified in the source as “博铎” immediately went to the scene. A search of the vehicle and the surrounding area found nine bodies, all Cambodian workers.

According to the investigation, the vehicle was carrying 15 passengers—14 men and one woman—and was heading towards the district identified in the source as “博米”. Officials said the vehicle may have been overloaded, causing a tyre to burst before it lost control and plunged into the canal.

Preliminary findings showed that all those who died had blue straw cords tied around their right wrists, which officials suspected were markers used in transporting workers. Reports said six people, including a Thai national who was the driver, jumped out of the vehicle and escaped after the incident.

Four of those who escaped were picked up by another pickup truck, while the other two fled the scene.

All the bodies have been sent to the forensic institute in Bangkok for autopsies to establish the precise cause of death and confirm their identities.

Police are gathering evidence at the scene and urgently pursuing the Thai driver who fled, in order to bring him to justice. Under the law, the driver may face charges of reckless driving causing death and illegally recruiting foreign workers.
