A December 8 report said Hun Sen had criticised Thailand’s hardline rhetoric and questioned whether tensions were being used for domestic political support. He reaffirmed Cambodian restraint and called for respect, communication and stability.

A December 8 report said Cambodian Senate President Samdech Hun Sen had recently issued a statement on social media expressing shock and regret at Thai Prime Minister Anutin’s harsh accusations against Cambodia and threats of military action. He stressed that Cambodia had consistently exercised restraint and should not be made a target of political manoeuvring.
Hun Sen said recent strong Thai statements made in the name of national security were heavily political. He said using tensions to gain domestic support could endanger soldiers’ and civilians’ lives and was extremely irresponsible.

He stressed that the two countries had a longstanding basis for border cooperation and should not undermine regional peace for electoral or political interests.
Hun Sen recalled friendly exchanges with Anutin before the latter became prime minister and regretted his sudden change of attitude. He said mutual respect and communication should remain basic principles for the two countries’ leaders, regardless of changes in political positions.

In the statement, Hun Sen said Cambodia had never initiated any conflict and had continued exercising a high degree of restraint. He urged Thailand to base its position on facts, stop rhetoric that exaggerated or manufactured hostility, and not treat a country that had taken no retaliatory action as a threat.
He reiterated that peace and stability remained Cambodia’s firm position and expressed hope that Thailand’s government would avoid damaging bilateral relations and regional stability for reasons of domestic politics.
