A December 9 report described tank and troop reinforcements on both sides and clashes about 16 kilometres from Poipet. Hun Sen said Cambodia had launched a full-scale self-defence counteroffensive after 24 hours of restraint.

The Cambodia–Thailand border situation escalated sharply on December 9. Both countries sent additional tanks and troops to the border that day, with clashes breaking out in several areas and artillery exchanges continuing, according to the report. Frontline reports described fierce fighting between Cambodian and Thai forces about 16 kilometres from Poipet, with the situation still developing.
Samdech Hun Sen said that after 24 hours of restraint Cambodia had launched a full-scale self-defence counteroffensive to protect people’s lives and national sovereignty. He said all Cambodian military deployments and responses fell within the scope of legitimate self-defence and urged the parties concerned to avoid further escalating tensions.
