Police in Vietnam’s Lao Cai province reportedly detained seven people from China’s Yunnan province for illegal entry and handed them over to China on December 1. Authorities also reiterated registration rules for premises hosting foreigners.

Police in Vietnam’s Lao Cai province recently detained 7 people from China’s Yunnan province who had crossed illegally into Vietnam. Investigators said they had crossed the China–Vietnam border through unofficial routes and planned to travel onward to a third country, but were discovered and swiftly detained after entering Vietnam. Following overnight checks of their identities and travel route, Vietnamese authorities had, on December 1, expelled all 7 people and handed them over to China for further handling.
Vietnam’s Immigration Department subsequently issued a notice reiterating the ban on harbouring or assisting anyone entering illegally. It reminded hotels, rental properties and private residences that they must register foreign guests in accordance with the law or face severe penalties. Authorities urged the relevant sectors to remain alert and cooperate in preventing cross-border illegal activities.
