Mong Reththy, managing director of Mong Reththy Group, decided to remove 500 hectares of old oil palms after 25 years of harvests as yields had declined sharply. On August 26, 2025, he showed on Facebook how he had inspected machinery clearing palms that had reached the end of their productive life. New palms will replace them. He said oil palms take about 36 months from the seedling stage to flowering and fruiting and can be harvested for 25 years. Old palms will be shredded for compost. The plantation is in Ta Ney commune, Prey Nob district, Preah Sihanouk province. The company brought in planting stock from Zaire and Costa Rica and planted it in 1996. At the start of the 2026 rainy season, it plans to plant 90,000 palms imported from Malaysia across 500 hectares. The report says the company planted 477 hectares in 1996 and later expanded to 16,000 hectares, becoming Cambodia’s largest oil palm grower and ranking fourth in Southeast Asia. The plantation is a joint investment by Mong Reththy Group and TCC Group that the report describes as Cambodia’s first and largest oil palm producer. In 2014, 16,000 hectares were planted towards an overall goal of 30,000 hectares, with crude palm oil exported to Southeast Asian and European Community markets.
