Preah Sihanouk Governor Mang Sineth met a US Embassy delegation led by Chargé d’Affaires Bridgette L. Walker on the morning of August 28. He said trade, investment and support in other areas had contributed to Cambodia’s economic and social development.
He highlighted US support for returning Cambodian cultural objects, promoting cultural heritage, education and demining. He said Cambodia was committed to closer ties for mutual benefit.
Mang Sineth told Walker that the United States had helped build the roughly 230-kilometre National Road 4, which connects Phnom Penh and Preah Sihanouk, in 1955.
He recalled that during the COVID-19 pandemic Cambodia allowed the Westerdam cruise ship, carrying thousands of passengers, to dock at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port after other countries turned it away.
He marked the 75th anniversary of Cambodia–US diplomatic relations and thanked US President Donald Trump for helping to secure a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.
Walker conveyed Trump’s commitment to lasting peace for Cambodia and support for the ceasefire agreed by Cambodia and Thailand in Malaysia on July 28.
She said US government and private-sector trade and investment could support Cambodia’s development goals of middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2050.
Walker hoped the anniversary would deepen cooperation in education, culture, public health, defence and fighting online fraud, and especially strengthen ties between people in both countries.
Mang Sineth outlined the province’s beaches and islands, which he said had received international recognition. He cited its rail and road connections, including National Roads 3 and 4 and the expressway, its three international ports and its international airport. He said Sihanoukville Autonomous Port was expanding with the aim of accommodating larger ocean-going vessels by 2030.
Mang Sineth asked Walker to help attract more US investors and visitors to the province.
