Phnom Penh mayor calls for tighter management of Chaktomuk Walk Street

At a meeting with local party members in Chey Chumneas commune, Doun Penh district, the previous day, Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng described tourism as a pillar of Cambodia’s economy and an important source of public revenue and economic activity. He urged people across society to develop new attractions and support sustainable tourism in the capital and nationwide. He said Chaktomuk Walk Street had become a focal point for Phnom Penh nightlife. The car-free stretch of more than two kilometres offers exercise, leisure, Khmer arts, pop-up performances, acrobatics, a mobile library and food stalls. The report cited a second-place global nightlife ranking for Phnom Penh and linked it to the city’s growing appeal. He called on authorities to keep the street orderly, prevent illegal encroachment and structures and curb disruptive conduct. Performances should showcase Khmer culture and avoid vulgar content. Parking charges should be transparent and fair, and roads must stay clear for emergency services. Local party representatives said the commune’s 11 villages had benefited from stronger community work and security, including action against illegal online gambling and stepped-up patrols. Participants expressed support for Prime Minister Hun Manet, saying he had carried on Hun Sen’s leadership and defended Cambodia’s interests in the legal dispute over sovereignty along the Thai border. Khuong Sreng said nightlife was both a place for residents and visitors to relax and a showcase for Cambodian culture.
