Preah Sihanouk Provincial Television, September 3 — China held a parade in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square marking 80 years since victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Leaders from 26 countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, attended.
US President Donald Trump did not attend. In a social media post that day, he wished the Chinese people a fine, lasting celebration. He also recalled US support and sacrifices in helping China resist aggression during World War II and urged people to remember the Americans who died in that effort.
Trump told reporters that he did not see the parade as a challenge to the United States and said he had a good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He said China needed the United States more than the United States needed China in many respects.
The post also drew attention. Trump asked Xi Jinping to pass his warmest regards to Putin and Kim Jong Un, adding “as you conspire against The United States of America.”
Analysts said his remarks reflected caution in US–China relations at a major international event and the sensitive, complicated US reaction to developments in China–Russia–North Korea relations.
