A Cambodian health ministry notice dated September 3 reported excessive mercury in two Loveriya body and face care products, warning of possible skin cancer and nervous system damage. It also found three cosmetics without ministry registration or notification numbers. The National Health Laboratory analysed samples of two health supplements and 12 Loveriya cosmetics from ឆេង ស្រីរ័ត្ន. Two supplements and three cosmetics among the samples lacked ministry registration or notification numbers. The National Health Laboratory’s analysis reported the following findings. 1. An unregistered LOVE RIYA oral supplement marketed for dark spots was found to contain the undisclosed active pharmaceutical ingredient tranexamic acid. The drug is used to control bleeding under a doctor’s or medical professional’s supervision. 2. Two cosmetics without ministry notification numbers, Loveriya Double White Body Lotion and a Loveriya facial powder marketed for flesh-coloured and small acne bumps, pustules, inflamed acne and dark spots, contained salicylic acid and mercury above the limits set in ASEAN cosmetics guidelines. According to the notice, excessive salicylic acid can cause dry skin, irritation and allergic reactions. Excessive mercury can harm kidney function and the nervous system and may cause skin cancer. The ministry urged the public to stop buying or using the three products immediately. It also urged people to stop using supplements without registration numbers and cosmetics without ministry notification numbers. It warned that these products were not guaranteed to meet technical quality and safety standards, and could cause financial loss, harm to health or even death.
