To maintain safety and public order and curb the use of fake mobile base stations, Preah Sihanouk authorities prohibited hotel and casino owners from installing Fake BTS devices on vehicles or buildings. Operators who have installed them must stop immediately and hand the equipment over to the competent authorities.
The provincial authorities also ordered companies and import agents to stop importing, supplying or distributing the devices without authorisation. They asked anyone with information on imports, sales, distribution or installation to contact the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia on 6789 or the provincial Department of Posts and Telecommunications on 012 978 815 or 016 696 270.
The warning followed the provincial administration’s discovery of unusual text messages about gambling, private lending and other spam sent to mobile users in the province. The authorities advised the public to avoid opening or replying to these messages, especially to avoid clicking links of unknown origin.
