Preah Sihanouk Provincial Television, September 6 — An off-duty Hong Kong police officer reportedly went missing after being lured to a suspected scam compound in Cambodia. The officer returned safely to Hong Kong on September 4. The Organised Crime and Triad Bureau has taken over the investigation.
The officer reportedly worked in the report room at Ma On Shan Police Station. In mid-August, he took leave to go to mainland China, saying his mother had been involved in a road accident in Guangxi, and then lost contact. On August 27, the station received several calls from unknown numbers. The caller provided the officer’s name and service number and said he had been taken to a scam compound in Cambodia, had got out, and was seeking help at a local police station. His mother had also sought help at Sheung Shui Police Station.
A source said the officer originally planned to do business in Guangxi through a friend, but was taken to Cambodia after entering mainland China. According to that account, he was abandoned in a mountainous area after his identity became known, escaped and contacted Hong Kong police for help.
A Hong Kong government spokesperson confirmed the officer had returned safely and said police were investigating the circumstances and would take appropriate action under the law.
