On the morning of September 7, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged authorities at all levels to protect the public during the upcoming Kan Ben and Pchum Ben festivals so that Buddhists across the country could observe traditional rites safely. His message follows in full: Cambodia’s traditional Kan Ben and Pchum Ben festivals will begin on September 8. Buddhist brothers, sisters and elders will follow the beliefs handed down by their ancestors and visit pagodas across the capital and provinces to make merit, give alms and dedicate the merit to their ancestors and relatives across seven generations. I wish everyone safe travels and urge all travellers to observe traffic laws strictly. I ask the relevant authorities in the capital, provinces and local communities, especially festival organising committees at all pagodas, to work together to organise the ceremonies well. Please keep worshippers safe and ensure a joyful setting in which Buddhists everywhere can make merit and observe their traditional religious practices. Preah Sihanouk Provincial Television.
