Preah Sihanouk Provincial Television, September 7 — Thailand’s king issued a royal command appointing Anutin prime minister today. A new general election could follow early next year. Anutin spoke after receiving the royal command. The station reported that he pledged to do his utmost to serve the people and the country with loyalty and integrity and to honour the king’s trust. He was to select cabinet members and submit their names for royal appointment. The cabinet would then take the oath. Since the 2023 election, Thailand’s government had been led by the Shinawatra family’s Pheu Thai Party. The family’s most recent prime minister, Paetongtarn, was removed by a court last month. Anutin quickly began building a governing coalition and won Friday’s parliamentary vote. Pheu Thai lost the premiership. Anutin, 58, previously served as deputy prime minister and minister of the interior and public health. One of his best-known policies was promoting cannabis legalisation in 2022, making him a prominent figure in Thai politics. Compiled by our newsroom
