A joint Cambodia–Republic of Korea task force is planned for November to strengthen cooperation between the two countries’ authorities against crimes involving Korean nationals in Cambodia, including technology-enabled scams. This was the shared position of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Republic of Korea President Lee Jae Myung at their bilateral working meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 27 October, during the ASEAN Summit. Both leaders said they would further strengthen cooperation to prevent, suppress and combat such crimes more effectively, contributing to security, public order and social safety. During an earlier visit to Cambodia by South Korea’s Second Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Jina, Hun Manet said Cambodia had consistently taken active, sustained and independent action against transnational crime, including technology-enabled scams. Kim Jina said Cambodian and Korean police had undertaken substantial cooperation with good results, but media coverage had not fully reflected those achievements, causing misunderstanding. She also said she would provide Cambodia’s Interior Ministry with a list of criminal targets, including foreign organisers of online scams. At the current meeting, the Cambodian prime minister and Korean president also agreed to widely publicise positive cooperation results. The report says Cambodia had already returned 180 Koreans to South Korea. Over the most recent four months of 2025, Cambodian authorities referred 75 suspected organisers and accomplices to court and detained more than 3,400 suspects linked to technology-enabled fraud.
