On 27 October, Phnom Penh police, in coordination with judicial and prosecutorial authorities, raided a warehouse of equipment allegedly used for online scams. Seven suspects were arrested: three Chinese nationals, including an alleged group leader, and four Cambodian nationals.
Police seized 2,323 phones, 12 Starlink devices, 48 LCD monitors, 447 all-in-one computers, 147 CPU cases, 239 monitors, 343 multi-function phone chargers, 89 wireless network-card modules and nearly 19,000 foreign and local SIM cards. Foreign SIM cards came from countries including the United States, Türkiye, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain and Italy.
Experts found that the equipment could be used for online fraud. According to the report, the SIM cards were used to register fake social-media accounts on services such as Telegram, Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat and Zalo, as well as bank accounts, to defraud people abroad.
The suspects reportedly admitted that they prepared technical and communications equipment and shipped it to provinces according to orders, supplying online-scam groups. The case was transferred to the Phnom Penh prosecutor’s office for further action.
Police said they would continue tracing other people involved and the sources of illegally imported and distributed equipment to dismantle the associated criminal networks.
