The Phnom Penh–Siem Reap speedboat service has resumed after a six-year suspension. Cambodian authorities said the move would boost tourism and give travelers more transport options.
Public Works and Transport Ministry spokesperson Phan Rim said the previous day that the service had been suspended in 2019 amid growing competition from air travel, buses and other transport, and was now returning. He viewed it as an alternative way to travel by water between the two cities.
Rim said Cambodians had used this waterway since the 19th century. However, he said: “Changes in trends and travel habits mean there are now various transport options. This caused the Phnom Penh–Siem Reap speedboat service to be suspended for a long time. We are only now beginning to see it reappear.”
He said the ministry fully supported and encouraged the resumption to boost tourism and offer travelers more choices.
One-way Phnom Penh–Siem Reap speedboat fares are US$29 for Cambodian travelers and US$49 for international visitors. Bus transfers are included, with the company taking passengers from the port to their final destinations.
