On December 8, tensions along the Thailand–Cambodia border escalated sharply. After chairing an emergency National Security Council meeting, Thai Prime Minister Anutin issued a strong statement accusing Cambodian troops of attacking Thai territory and said Thailand would take “all necessary military action” in response. He stressed that national sovereignty and public safety must not be violated and said all three branches of the armed forces were on high alert.
Cambodia also issued an update alleging that Thai troops had repeatedly fired across the border that afternoon at Chouk Chey and Prey Chan villages in Ou Bei Choan commune, Ou Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, seriously threatening local residents. Cambodia said its forces had lawfully exercised the right of self-defence and returned fire to protect territorial integrity and people’s lives and property. Escalating accusations on both sides sharply heightened border tensions and raised concern that the conflict could spread.
