On December 9, at 10:30 a.m., tensions along the Cambodian-Thai border escalated sharply again. In Samraong city in Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province, Thai air force F-16 aircraft dropped bombs, damaging some urban buildings and infrastructure. The number of casualties was still being checked.
According to frontline reports, this was the most intense single airstrike of the current round of fighting. Explosions occurred in the city centre, with shock waves affecting nearby homes and public facilities and causing great alarm among residents.
Cambodia’s armed forces had begun heavy-weapons countermeasures and strengthened defensive deployments under the direction of the highest command. The Defence Ministry said Cambodian forces were following the instructions of Senate President Samdech Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also urged the international community to pay attention to what it described as Thai forces’ continually escalating cross-border operations to prevent the situation from worsening further.
