Amid continuing Cambodia–Thailand border tensions, Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior carried out an emergency security operation overnight on December 8–9 to transfer detainees from border-province prisons on a large scale. The General Department of Prisons said the operation aimed to reduce potential risks from cross-border shelling and ensure the safety of prison facilities and people.
The report said the transfer was approved by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Sokha and directed by Chhorn Sanath, director-general of the General Department of Prisons. Because Oddar Meanchey Provincial Prison was assessed as facing a high shelling risk, authorities decided to move its 1,066 detainees, including 67 women, to Siem Reap province for continued detention. The operation began on the evening of December 8 and used a convoy of 32 vehicles, with more than 200 law-enforcement personnel providing escort and security.
The General Department of Prisons said the convoy reached its destination in the early hours of December 9 in an orderly operation without any incidents. Officials stressed that they would continue strengthening security at prisons in border areas to protect detainees’ and staff members’ lives.
