Speaking at an international meeting in Tokyo yesterday, Japan’s National Police Agency Commissioner General Yoshinobu Kusunoki said cooperation and a swift response among the countries concerned were extremely important in strengthening action against fraud groups based overseas.
In addition to Japan, 14 countries, including Cambodia, the Philippines and Thailand, and three organisations, including Interpol, attended the meeting.
Participants shared information on criminal organisations and cases they had investigated.
According to the National Police Agency, a total of 104 suspects had been arrested since last year through October this year on suspicion of involvement in Southeast Asia-based crimes targeting Japan, including scams in which perpetrators impersonate police officers.
Kusunoki said fraud losses in Japan last year had reached a record high of approximately 300 billion yen. He called organised fraud a major global challenge and said countries needed a worldwide dragnet to ensure criminals could not evade justice.
