Recently, a video posted by a Thai internet user circulated widely on social media, according to the report. It described a Thai soldier who had taken part in several days of border fighting as visibly tired, dispirited and under considerable psychological strain. Facing the camera, he asked: “What exactly are we fighting for?”
In the accompanying text, the uploader sharply criticised the government’s handling of the crisis, arguing that matters which could have been resolved through dialogue and diplomacy had instead become a prolonged military confrontation. The uploader said that if the parties ultimately had to return to negotiations, the current fighting would only cause unnecessary casualties, and questioned the practical point of continuing to fight.
The report said the footage quickly prompted debate in Thai society over the conflict’s direction and costs. Analysis cited in the report viewed the incident as partly reflecting frontline soldiers’ considerable psychological pressure under prolonged tension, as well as growing calls in society for a peaceful resolution.
