New York State health officials reported on Monday that a child had died in connection with measles during the ongoing outbreak. It was the first measles-associated death recorded in the state in more than 30 years.
The troubling development came just one month after New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared an emergency in response to the growing measles outbreak across areas of the state.
As of October 24, New York State had recorded 178 measles cases this year, including eight in New York City. According to the data, at least 96% of measles cases in the United States in 2026 occurred among people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination history was unknown.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, early measles symptoms include cough, a runny nose, a high fever of around 40°C, and red, watery eyes. Tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth two to three days after symptoms begin. Three to five days after the first symptoms, a red rash begins on the face at the hairline and spreads down to the neck, chest, abdomen, arms, legs and feet. Article by: Rithy
