Summary

Cambodia's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Taiwan, reaffirming support for China's reunification and opposition to Taiwan independence.

Tensions between China and Japan have recently escalated over Taiwan, particularly following Japanese remarks that a Taiwan contingency could involve the right of collective self-defence. In response to media inquiries, a Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesperson issued a formal statement on the evening of November 26, reaffirming the Cambodian government's position on Taiwan. Phnom Penh said Cambodia would firmly adhere to and pursue the one-China policy, recognising the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing all of China and stressing that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

The statement further said the Taiwan issue was purely China's internal affair and that no external force had the right to interfere. On that basis, Cambodia firmly supported China's pursuit of national reunification and opposed any form of separatist attempt at 'Taiwan independence'. The ministry also stressed that Cambodia consistently advocated resolving differences and disputes peacefully, with countries jointly safeguarding regional peace, stability and harmony on the basis of mutual respect.

The statement came as China-Japan relations deteriorated sharply over Taiwan. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had earlier made highly provocative remarks, saying that a Taiwan contingency could constitute a 'survival-threatening situation' enabling Japan to exercise collective self-defence. The comments immediately drew strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition from China, which lodged solemn representations and a strong protest with Japan. Cambodia's statement added a clear diplomatic footnote to the unsettled regional situation.
