Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said reports by ASEAN observers on both sides of the Thai-Cambodian border showed that the mines were not newly laid. His remarks challenged Thailand’s allegation that Cambodia had planted new mines, which Thailand cited in suspending implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
Mohamad Hasan said he had spoken with Thailand’s foreign minister and called for restraint and dialogue rather than steps that could worsen the situation.
Malaysia, as mediator, would continue working to ease tensions, he said. Cambodia wanted talks in Kuala Lumpur, while Thailand had also asked Malaysia to mediate. He urged both sides to resolve the matter through the existing agreement and dialogue.
Compiled report.
